Our Ancestors

Below is a list of surnames of the families I am researching. Some are my husband’s ancestors and some are mine.

 

 

ANDERSON

Elizabeth Anderson, born 1838, Kilmesssan, County Meath, Ireland, the daughter of William and Ann Anderson.

She married James Growcock in 1864 and settled at Derrypatrick, Meath and had a number of children including Jane, 1865; William, 1867; John, 1869; David, 1870; James, 1872; Anne, 1874; Catherine, 1876 and Elizabeth, 1878. James Growcock died in 1903 and Elizabeth Growcock died in 1914.

 

BARNES

Jane Barnes, born 1812, Brede Sussex, England, the eldest daughter and third child of Samuel and Jane Barnes (nee Neaves). She grew up in Sussex and married Henry Jarret in 1832. They had a number of children including Henry, 1833; Jane, 1834; Thomas, 1837. The family emigrated to Sydney onboard the Roxburgh Castle in 1838. They settled on the South Coast of NSW. Further children were born there including Judith, 1841; Elizabeth, 1843; William James, 1846; Edward, 1848; John Samuel,1850; Sarah Emily, 1852 and Susannah, 1855.

Jane Jarret died in 1884 and her husband Henry Jarrett died in 1886.

 

BAXTER

George Baxter, born in 1782, London, England, the fourth son and eighth child of James and Elizabeth Baxter (nee Dixon). He grew up in London and was a book-binder. He married Mary Brayne Kington in 1809. They had a number of children including James, 1810; Charles Cawthorn Dixon, 1811; George, 1813; Ann, 1814; Thomas George, 1816; Elizabeth Mary, 1818; Mary Ann, 1819; John, 1822 and Joseph George 1826.

George Baxter died in 1829 and his wife Mary Brayne Baxter remarried. She died in 1855.

Thomas George Baxter, born 1816, was the fifth child and fourth son of George and Mary Brayne Baxter (nee Kington). He grew up in London.

After his father’s death, he was convicted of pick-pocketing in 1833 and sentenced to 7 years transportation to New South Wales. He arrived in Sydney in 1834 onboard the Roslin Castle. Assigned to George Brown of Camden where he worked as a farm labourer. He received his Ticket-of-Leave in 1839 and his Certificate of Freedom in 1842.

He married a young widow Harriet Mary Armour in 1850 at The Oaks. They had a number of children including James, 1851; Elizabeth,1853; Mary, 1856; George Thomas, 1858; John, 1860; Charles, 1862; Mary Ellen, 1864; Robert, 1866; and Thomas Henry, 1869.

Thomas George Baxter died in Sydney in 1889 and his wife Harriet Mary Baxter died in 1907.

James Baxter, born 1851, Picton, NSW, the eldest son and child of Thomas George and Harriet Mary Baxter (nee Mather). He grew up in the Picton area and became a farmer. He married Margaret Jane Kennedy in 1878. They had a number of children including William James, 1879; Annie, 1880; Edward, 1882; Henry Thomas, 1884; Emily, 1886; Arthur, 1888; Percy, 1892; Stanley, 1895 and Ewart Gilbert, 1901.

James Baxter died in 1943 and Margaret Jane Baxter died in 1938.

BELL

George Bell, born 1817, East Farleigh, Kent, was the eighth child and fourth son of Thomas and Mary Bell (nee Battlemore). He grew up in Kent and was employed as a farm labourer. Along with a brother he emigrated to Sydney in 1837 as a sailor on the convict ship Asia.

He married Sarah Sargent in 1844 at Sutton Forest. They settled in Picton and had a number of children including George, 1845; James, 1847; Thomas, 1849; Harriet, 1852; Henry, 1854; John, 1856; Emma, 1858, and Alice in 1863.

George Bell died in 1894 at Picton. His wife Sarah Bell died in 1865.

James Bell, born 1812, East Farleigh, Kent, the third son and fifth child of Thomas and Mary Ann Bell (nee Battlemore). He emigrated to Australia with his brother as a sailor a the convict ship Asia in 1837. He married Elizabeth Crockett in 1851 at Picton and settled there. They had a number of children including Thomas, 1852; Ellen, 1854; Arthur George, 1856; Elizabeth Jane, 1858: Flora Emily Mary, 1860; Susan, 1862; Leticia Kate, 1864; William James Allen, 1868: Hannah Louisa, 1869; Richard Ebenezer, 1871 and Eliza in 1873.

The family moved to the Gundagai area.

James Bell died in 1878. His widow Elizabeth remarried. She died in 1904.

John Bell, born 1856, Picton, NSW, the fifth son, and sixth child of George and Sarah Bell (nee Sargent). He became a blacksmith. He married Alice Sherwood in 1878. They had a number of children including Emma Frances, 1878; Alice, 1880; Florence Olive, 1882; Henry William, 1884; Ivy Winifred, 1886; Harriet May, 1891; Ida Mildred, 1892 and Vida Mary, 1895.

John Bell died in 1951 and Alice Bell died in 1939.

Thomas Bell, born 1753, Mereworth, Kent, the eldest son and child of Thomas and Elizabeth Bell (nee Purvey). He grew up in Mereworth and was a farm labourer. He married Ann Lawrence in 1778 at Tudley Kent. They had a number of children including Jane, 1878; John, 1780; Thomas, 1782; Robin, 1785; Elizabeth, 1787; William, 1789; Mary, 1791; Ann, 1794 and Frances, 1797.

Thomas Bell died in 1819 and Ann Bell died in 1826. Both are buried in unmarked graves in St Lawrence, Mereworth Churchyard.

Thomas Bell, born 1782, Mereworth, Kent, the second son and third child of Thomas and Ann Bell (nee Lawrence). He grew up in Mereworth and worked as a farm labourer. He married Mary Ann Battlemore in 1804 at Tonbridge, Kent. They had a number of children including William, 1805; Thomas, 1806; Leticia, 1808; Harriet, 1810; James, 1812; Louisa, 1814, Elizabeth Anne, 1816; George, 1817; John, 1818; Louisa, 1821; Caroline, 1822; and Allen, 1827.

Mary Ann Bell died in 1827 and Thomas Bell remarried. He died in 1857.

CAFE

Elizabeth Cafe, born 1848, Queanbeyan, NSW, the fourth daughter and child of James and Bridget Cafe (nee Connelly). She married firstly Francis Lynch in 1869. They had a daughter Mary Emeline born in 1869. She married secondly Edward Finlay in 1880. They had a number of children including Elvena Magdalina, 1875; Agnes Adelaide, 1877; Gertrude Elizabeth, 1881; Fidelis Ann, 1884; Edward John, 1887, and Sydney Bernard Vincent, 1889.

Edward Finlay died in 1913 and Elizabeth Finlay died in 1925.

CAIRNS

Agnes Willis Cairns, born 1819, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, the eldest daughter and second child of Michael Cairns and Elizabeth Merry. She accompanied her mother on board a convict ship to Tasmania in 1829. She married James Wheeler in 1835.

They had a number of children including Agnes Jane, 1835; James, 1837; Joseph, 1840; Elizabeth, 1841; Susannah, 1844; William, 1846; Benjamin, 1848; Ellen Bridget, 1849; Benjamin, 1851; Ellen, 1851; Helen, 1853; John, 1855; Jeanette, 1858; George Thomas, 1861; Mary Catherine, 1862 and Maria Willis, 1866.

James Wheeler died 1878 and Agnes Willis Wheeler died in 1901.

FINLAY

Edward Finlay, born 1842, Morpeth, New South Wales, the fourth son and fifth child of Michael and Caroline McCarthy). The family later moved to the Goulburn District. He married Elizabeth Café in 1880 at Forbes.

They had a number of children including Elvena Magdalina, 1875; Agnes Adelaide, 1877; Gertrude Elizabeth, 1881; Fidelis Ann, 1884; Edward John, 1887 and Sydney Bernard Vincent, 1889.

Edward Finlay died in 1913 and Elizabeth Finlay died in 1925.

GOODWIN

Margaret Jane Goodwin, born 1858, Kiama, New South Wales, the eldest daughter and second child of William and Mary Ann Goodwin (nee McMahon). She grew up on the South Coast and married Thomas Nathaniel Vidler in 1878. They had a number of children including Florence Ellen, 1878; Thomas William Nesbitt, 1881; Edward Herbert, 1883; Sidney Vincent, 1885; Harold Frederick Grenville, 1887; Constance Irene, 1889; Olive Pearl, 1890; Claribel Myrtle, 1892 and Mary Josephine, 1893.

Margaret Jane Vidler died in 1910. Thomas Nathaniel Vidler then remarried. He died in 1934.

William Goodwin, born 1833, Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland, the second son and third child of William and Ann Goodwin (nee McCrea). Emigrated to Australia in 1854 on board Switzerland. He married Mary Ann McMahon in 1855. They had a number of children including William, 1856; Margaret Jane, 1858; Annie Ellen 1861; Joseph, 1862; Alice, 1864; Hugh, 1870, Emma, 1873; Catherine 1875; James, 1877; Ethel, 1880; Eliza 1882 and Frances Violet, 1884.

William Goodwin died in 1913 and Mary Ann Goodwin in 1918.

 

GROWCOCK

William Growcock, born 1867, County Meath, Ireland, the eldest son and second child of James and Elizabeth Growcock (nee Anderson). He grew up in the Rathmoylan area as a herdsman. He emigrated to Queensland in 1891 on the Jumna. He first settled in Queensland but later moved to northern New South Wales and farmed at Zara near Chillingham. He married Olive Pearl Vidler in 1910 and had a number of children including Myra Margaret, 1912; Doris Eileen, 1913; Merle Irene, 1915; Olive Elizabeth, 1918; William James, 1921; Myrtle Faith, 1923; Ailsa Joan, 1926 and Robert David, 1928. William Growcock died in 1929. His widow Olive Growcock then remarried. She died in 1976.

 

HODGETTS

Edward Hodgetts, born in 1843, was the the eldest son and second child of James and Mary Hodgetts (nee Fagan). He grew up in the Longford area. He married Jeanette Wheeler in 1875. They had a number of children including Willis Mary Elizabeth, 1876; Hilda Jane, 1878; Alice Maud, 1880; Agnes Mary, 1883 and Vernon Edward, 1886.

Edward Hodgetts died in 1912 and Jeanette Hodgetts died in 1940.

James Hodgetts, born 1817, Launceston, Tasmania, the third son and fourth child of John and Olivia Hodgetts (nee Lucas). He grew up in the Longford area. He married Mary Fagan in 1841. They had a number of children including Elizabeth, 1841; Edward, 1843; Henry, 1845; Thomas, 1846; Jane, 1848; John, 1850; George, 1853; Mary Maria, 1855; Charles, 1857; Alfred James, 1859, Olivia Eleanor Rose, 1861 and Richard, 1864.

James Hodgetts died in 1903 and Mary Hodgetts died in 1885.

John Hodgetts, born 1791, Parramatta, New South Wales, the eldest son and child of Thomas and Harriet Hodgetts. He grew up in the area. He went to Norfolk Is with his parents and returned to Sydney with them. He married Olivia Lucas in 1811. They had a number of children including Hannah, 1812; Thomas, 1813; Nathanial, 1815; James, 1817; Mary Ann Maria, 1819; John, 1821; Richard, 1823; Jane, 1825; Elizabeth, 1826; Sarah, 1829; Henrietta, 1831; Hester, 1835 and Charles, 1837.

John, Olivia, and family migrated to Tasmania in 1816 and settled in the Longford area. John was a blacksmith and farmer.

John Hodgetts died in 1871. Olivia Hodgetts died in 1851.

Thomas Hodgetts, born 1763, Wednesbury, Staffordshire, the fifth son and ninth child of Richard and Elizabeth Hodgetts. He grew up in Wednesbury and worked in the family business making gun barrels. He married Ann Duce in 1783. They had three children, Ann, 1783; Joseph, 1785, and Thomas, 1788. Thomas Hodgetts was convicted of stealing in 1787 and was sentenced to seven years transportation. He left his family in Wednesbury. He embarked on the Second Fleet on board the Scarborough in 1790 and arrived in Sydney several months later.

Onboard the Neptune, another of the ships of the Second Fleet was a young woman named Harriet who claimed to be the wife of Thomas Hodgetts when she arrived in Sydney. They lived for many years as husband and wife although they never officially married. Thomas and Harriet Hodgetts had a number of children including John, 1791; Mary, 1793; Mary Maria, 1795; Sarah, 1797; Elizabeth, 1801; James, 1804; Daniel, 1806; Hannah, 1808 and Jane 1811.

The family lived in Sydney, Parramatta, Norfolk Island, and Pitt Town before moving to Longford in Tasmania. Thomas was a Blacksmith and farmer.

Thomas Hodgetts died in 1823 and Harriet Hodgetts died in 1850.

 

LUCAS

Olivia Lucas, born 1795, Norfolk Island, the fourth daughter, and sixth child of Nathanial and Olivia Lucas (nee Gascoigne). She grew up on Norfolk Island but returned to Sydney with her family. She married John Hodgetts in 1811.

They had a number of children including Hannah, 1812; Thomas, 1813; Nathanial, 1815; James, 1817; Mary Ann Maria, 1819; John, 1821; Richard, 1823; Jane, 1825; Elizabeth, 1826; Sarah, 1829; Henrietta, 1831; Hester, 1835 and Charles, 1837. John, Olivia, and family migrated to Tasmania in 1816 and settled in the Longford area. John was a blacksmith and farmer.

John Hodgetts died in 1871. Olivia Hodgetts died in 1851.

MACKEY

James Mackey, born 1886, Brisbane, the eldest son of James and Winifred Mackey (nee O’Neill). He was only three years of age when his mother died. He was raised by a maternal aunt and uncle, Alice and John Kirby. He moved to northern NSW when a young man and worked in the timber industry. He married Honorah Lena Stapleton in 1912. They had a family including James John, b 1914, and Rose Winifred in 1920. The family lived at Mullumbimby for many years.

James Mackey died in 1950 and Honorah Lena Mackey died in 1959.

MCMAHON

Mary Ann McMahon, born 1839 Enniskillen, Ireland, the eldest daughter and child of Hugh and Margaret McMahon (nee Mallon). Emigrated to Australia with parents on board the United Kingdom in 1841. Grew up on the South Coast of New South Wales and married William Goodwin in 1855.

They had a number of children including William, 1856; Margaret Jane, 1858; Annie Ellen 1861; Joseph, 1862; Alice, 1864; Hugh, 1870, Emma, 1873; Catherine 1875; James, 1877; Ethel, 1880; Eliza 1882 and Frances Violet, 1884.

William Goodwin died in 1913 and Mary Ann Goodwin in 1918.

SHERWOOD

Alice Sherwood, born 1854, Armidale, NSW, the second daughter and third child of Robert and Margaretta Sherwood (nee Shinkwin). She married John Bell in 1878. They had a number of children including Emma Frances, 1878; Alice, 1880; Florence Olive, 1882; Henry William, 1884; Ivy Winifred, 1886; Harriet May, 1891; Ida Mildred, 1892 and Vida Mary, 1895.

Alice Bell died in 1939 and John Bell died in 1951.

SHINKWIN

William Shinkwin, born 1801, County Cork, Ireland the son of Thomas and Mary Shinkwin (nee Lee). He was convicted at the Cork Assizes in 1823 of Political Insurrection and was sentenced to seven years transportation to NSW.  He arrived in 1825 on board the convict ship Hooghly. He received his Certificate of Freedom in 1830. He married Rosetta McDonald in 1831. Rosetta already had a daughter Margaretta when they married.

William and Rosetta Shinkwin had a son Thomas, born in 1841.

For many years William was the Superintendent at Duro Station near Yass.

William Shinkwin died in 1881 and Rosetta Shinkwin died in 1888.

STAPLETON

Michael Stapleton, born 1852, Tipperary, Ireland, the fourth son and fifth child of Michael and Catherine Stapleton (nee O’Brien). He emigrated to Queensland on board the Sepia in 1875. He married Roseanna Kane in 1883. They had a family including Michael, 1884; Andrew, 1886; Catherine Veronica, 1889; Margaret Ann, 1891; Honorah Lena, 1894; Daniel Patrick, 1896; James Joseph, 1898, Mary Ellen, 1901; Mathew John, 1903 and  William Thomas, 1907.

Michael Stapleton worked in the railways in Queensland and NSW and later in a timber mill.

He died in 1938 and his wife Rosanna Stapleton died in 1947.

VIDLER

William Vidler, born 1830, Kent, England, the second son and sixth child of William and Harriet Vidler (nee Walters). He emigrated to Australia on board the Maitland in 1838. He married Jane Jarrett in 1855 and settled at Jamberoo in southern NSW.

They had a number of children including Thomas Nathaniel, 1856; John William, 1857; Henry Albert, 1858; Frederick Ashley, 1860; George Angel James, 1861; Kezia Jane, 1863; Arthur Edward, 1864; Robert Alexander, 1866; Samuel Andrew, 1868; Susanna Harriet, 1869; Noah Mark, 1870; Herbert Ebenezer, 1872; Elizabeth Emily, 1874; Sarah Ann, 1875; Mary Ellen, 1877 and Isabella Maude, 1879.

William Vidler died 1919 and Jane Vidler died in 1930.

WHEELER

James Wheeler, born 1816, Hobart, Tasmania, the eldest son and child of James and Jane Brown (nee Wheeler). Although born as Brown he was known as Wheeler for much of his life. He grew up in Tasmania. He married Agnes Willis Cairns in 1835. They had a number of children including Agnes Jane, 1835; James, 1837; Joseph, 1840; Elizabeth, 1841; Susannah, 1844; William, 1846; Benjamin, 1848; Ellen Bridget, 1849; Benjamin, 1851; Ellen, 1851; Helen, 1853; John, 1855; Jeanette, 1858; George Thomas, 1861; Mary Catherine, 1862 and Maria Willis, 1866.

James Wheeler died 1878 and Agnes Willis Wheeler died in 1901.

Jeanette Wheeler, born 1858, Longford, Tasmania, the seventh daughter, and thirteenth child of James and Agnes Willis Wheeler (nee Cairns). She married Edward Hodgetts in 1875.

They had a number of children including Willis Mary Elizabeth, 1876; Hilda Jane, 1878; Alice Maud, 1880; Agnes Mary, 1883 and Vernon Edward, 1886.

Edward Hodgetts died in 1912.

Jeanette Hodgetts also had a number of children with Ernest Thomas Hodgetts including Albert Melfort Ferdinand, 1889; Unnamed twins, 1893; Clifton Hill, 1894; Gladys Louisa, 1894; Thomas Malcolm, 1897; Dorothy Ruth, 1897; Peter William Vernon, 1900 and Jeanetta, 1902. Jeanette Hodgetts died in 1940. Ernest Thomas Hodgetts died in 1945.
